Information Freak

Yes that's me. Ming the information freak! =]

I don't narrow my mind on certain things, instead, I am interested in knowing EVERYTHING.

Seriously.

I know some of you might say, 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing'.

And that I agree to a certain extent. The type of knowledge I want to acquire are good... I think.

Anyways, today I will share with you some surprising facts about JELLYFISH!

First up, would be the siphonophore.

Ever heard about the Portuguese Man o' War?

It looks like a jellyfish to most people, and may look like a monster from a sci-fi horror show to some.

But actually the Portuguese Man o' War isn't truly a jellyfish! It is a siphonophore.

WTH is a siphonophore Ming?!?!

Well, it is a colony of a few highly modified specialized polyps and medusoids. Polyps, correct me if I'm wrong... are the early stages of the jellyfish's life cycle while medusa is the adult form of a jellyfish.

Hence, the PMW is a siphonophore and that being said requires the functions of the individual polyps and medusoids in order to survive. Interesting eh?

Now for the largest jellyfish in the world!

It's the Cyanea Capillata aka Lion's Mane Jellyfish!

Found mostly near the cold waters of the Arctic and Atlantic, these guys are enormous! The LMJ is the longest known animal alive due to its super long tentacles!

The longest tentacles of the LMJ ever recorded was a wooping 120 feet long and the LMJ may weigh up to 400 kg!!!

Scary! :O

Lastly, the world's deadliest jellyfish.

The chironex fleckeri, is one of the sub-species of the infamous box jellyfish family. It is also known as the sea wasp throughout Australia.

Why the deadliest? When stung with the right amount, it has the fastest rate of fatality after envenomation with the average of 4 minutes observed from most cases. This jelly has the fastest reacting venom known compared to other animals such as snakes or insects. Crazy!

If all the venom can be collected from one of these mamasitas, it can kill up to 60 full grown humans!

Well, that's all I got for you guys today, would love to share more things in the near future. :P

Hope you enjoyed it.

Peace out!

:)
